![]() ![]() Older pieces might be stuffed with animal hair which carpet beetle larvae will happily infest. They belong to several families, with most of them in the family Curculionidae (the true weevils ). Approximately 97,000 species of weevils are known. They are usually small, less than 6 mm ( 14 in) in length, and herbivorous. Old furniture: Be prepared to let your natural fiber, silk, or wool chair or rug go if you have a serious problem. Weevils are beetles belonging to the superfamily Curculionoidea, known for their elongated snouts. Colour Bright colours to brown or black Size From 0.25 mm to over 100 mm Description All beetles have hard outer wing cases, known as elytra, and a hard upper body, called a carapace. The Varied Carpet Beetle is an introduced pest species. The antennae have a club shape at the tips. The wing covers (elytra) are hairy with parallel lines of fine ridges along the length. Keep clothes clean and run laundry regularly to ensure that your dirty clothes aren't contributing to a carpet beetle problem. The adult Hairy Fungus Beetle is a small brown oval-shaped hairy beetle. Depending on the species, a female grain beetle may lay between 40 and 300 eggs each year. Chemical treatment may be needed as a last resort, but contact a local pest control company that specializes in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) before proceeding in that direction. The eggs are difficult to see with the naked eye. Warning Sanitation and cleaning are the best methods to control carpet beetles. All species of grain beetles lay eggs individually or in batches deposited in or around a ready food supply. Cotton is not a preferred food source for carpet beetles unless it is heavily soiled with sweat or food stains. The Bread beetle, Stegobium paniceum, also known as the Biscuit beetle (or the Drugstore beetle in the U.S.A.) is one of the commonest pest insects of stored food. The life cycle of the grain beetles consists of the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Soiled laundry: Clothing made of silk, wool, feathers, leather, felt, and furs can also be a food source, especially when dirty. The Varied Carpet Beetle is brown or black and mottled. Remove food sources, such as pet and human hair, books, seeds, grains, and flour. All carpet beetles are between 2-4mm long with the exception of the Fur Beetle which is 4.5-6mm long. It’s common to mistake a German roach for a Junebug or a click beetle, for example. Some people might confuse German cockroaches with beetles even more easily than larger roaches due to their size and color. Food: Larvae will be more destructive than adult carpet beetles because the hatchlings are incredibly voracious eaters. They grow to only about a half-inch long and are a paler brown color.Screenless windows: Keep your screenless windows and doors closed, especially in the spring, summer, and fall months, when carpet beetle adults are most likely to fly inside. Foreign grain beetle adults and larvae feed on molds and fungi, and not on grain as the name would imply.Fresh-cut flowers: If you enjoy fresh-cut flowers in your home, gently shake your flowers out before bringing them in to make sure carpet beetles aren't hiding inside feeding on pollen. ![]() The Spruce Home Improvement Review Board. ![]()
